Monday night's storm wasn't subtle. Winds hit 68 mph near Sky Harbor. Mesa recorded a 53 mph gust. If you were outside, you felt it. If you were inside, you heard it. And if your roof hasn't had a real look since then, it needs one.
Here's the thing about monsoon wind damage: most of it doesn't announce itself. You don't see a tarp-worthy hole in the morning. You see your roof, and it looks fine. That's the problem. The damage that costs the most, the ridge tile that shifted two inches, the shingle tab with a broken seal, the flashing that's now open at the base of your chimney, none of that shows up in a glance from the driveway.
People imagine wind damage as shingles flying off. That happens. But with outflow winds from a monsoon storm cell, the mechanics are different.
When a storm's downdraft hits the ground and spreads outward, it doesn't blow from one direction. It radiates. That outflow hits the side of your house, travels upward, and peels over the roof edge, creating uplift pressure that tries to lift the roof surface off the deck. The corners and ridge take the worst of it. The eaves are a close second.
Outflow from this event wasn't a sustained gust. It was a wall of air, and it came fast. That matters because roofs are engineered to resist sustained design-load pressures, but an abrupt outflow event creates pressure pulses that stress fasteners and mortar bonds in ways that show up after the fact rather than during.
What we find on East Valley roofs after events like this: ridge tile displacement, shingle seal failures on south- and west-facing pitches, open flashing at HVAC curbs and chimney bases. All of it invisible from the street.
These two roof types fail differently in a wind event, and understanding which you have changes what you're looking for.
Concrete tile roofs are heavy and generally hold up well in Arizona wind. The weak point isn't the field tile. It's the ridge and hip tiles. These are typically mortar-set along the top of the roof. Over years of AZ heat and UV, that mortar gets brittle. Sealants in this climate typically degrade in 5 to 7 years. By the time a neighborhood is 12 to 15 years old, the ridge mortar on a lot of these homes is already marginal.
A 53 mph gust in Mesa doesn't need to rip a field tile off to cause a problem. It just needs to break a ridge tile loose. Once that bond goes, the tile shifts. Water now has direct access to the underlayment every time it rains. And it will rain again before September 30.
The other tile issue we see after wind events: displaced tiles rattling against adjacent tiles create hairline fractures. Not visible from the ground. Not even obvious up close unless you're looking for it. But a hairline crack in a concrete tile grows under thermal expansion every day the Arizona sun hits it.
Asphalt shingle roofs fail differently. The most common post-storm finding isn't a missing shingle. It's a shingle that's right there on the roof, flat, looks fine, but the factory adhesive seal strip underneath is broken. Wind got under the leading edge of the tab during the storm and snapped that seal. The shingle relaxed back down after the wind passed. It'll look intact until the next storm, when it lifts a little more, and a little more after that.
We see this pattern on south- and west-facing pitches in particular. Those are the faces that took the outflow gust most directly on Monday. Homes built in Mesa and Gilbert between 1995 and 2010, with original architectural or 3-tab shingles, should absolutely get eyes on those faces.
One architectural note: gable-end roofs take higher uplift at the rake edges than hip roofs. If your house has a gable end that faced the wind on July 21, the rake edges on those gable returns are the first place to look.
Most Arizona homeowner policies require claims to be filed within one year of the storm event. Some have shorter windows. Check yours.
But the legal deadline isn't really the clock that matters.
The real clock is documentation. A claim filed today, with dated inspection photos and a written contractor report tying the damage to a specific storm on a specific date, that's a clean claim. A claim filed in October, after two more monsoon events have come through, with no pre-existing inspection record? The insurer's adjuster will tell you the damage could have been from any of those storms, or from general wear. And they're not wrong to ask.
The sequence that actually protects you:
First, photograph what you can from the ground right now. Roofline, gutters, vents, any dented AC condenser fins. Collateral damage matters. Wind strong enough to displace roof tiles is strong enough to dent aluminum, and that corroborating evidence carries weight with adjusters.

Third, file promptly once you have documentation. Don't sit on it.
Fourth, ask your roofer to be present when the adjuster comes. That's your right as a homeowner. Adjusters are generalists. Your roofer knows what AZ tile failure looks like after a wind event; the adjuster may not. Having someone there who can walk the adjuster through the findings makes a measurable difference in how claims get scoped.
One other policy detail worth checking before you file: does your policy pay actual cash value or replacement cost value? ACV means depreciation comes off your payout. If your shingle roof is 15 years old and costs $14,000 to replace, an ACV policy might pay considerably less than that. RCV covers what replacement actually costs today. That gap matters, and it's worth knowing before you file.
From the ground, yes. Get a pair of binoculars and look at the roofline in good morning light. You're scanning for displaced ridge tiles, shingles that appear lifted or wavy, exposed flashing around penetrations, and debris sitting in the valleys. If something looks wrong from 20 feet away on the ground, something is definitely wrong up close.
From the roof itself, this isn't really a DIY situation. Not because it's beyond anyone's ability to climb a ladder, but because you won't know what you're looking at. Hairline tile fractures look like nothing. A broken seal strip under a shingle is invisible until you manually lift the tab. Flashing that's open at the base is covered by the tile above it. These aren't things you spot on a casual walk-up.

The most expensive damage, the stuff that turns a $400 repair into a $4,000 one, is almost always the damage nobody noticed until it showed up as a ceiling stain in November. Get someone up there who knows what they're looking for.

None of this is catastrophic on its own. But every one of those findings, if left through the rest of monsoon season, becomes a water damage problem by October. That's the pattern we see every year in this market.

My roof looks fine from the driveway. Do I really need an inspection?
If your home is more than 10 years old, probably yes. The damage pattern after a 53-68 mph outflow event is almost entirely invisible from the ground on tile roofs, and only partially visible on shingle roofs. "Looks fine" is not the same as "is fine" after a storm of this magnitude.
Is it worth filing a claim for one or two displaced tiles?
Maybe not. One or two displaced tile repairs typically run $300 to $600. If your deductible is $2,000, filing doesn't make financial sense unless there's underlayment damage underneath. Get the inspection first. If the damage scope is limited to surface tile, repair it and skip the claim. If there's underlayment involvement, the math changes.
Will my insurance rate go up if I file a monsoon wind damage claim?
Under Arizona law, insurers cannot raise your rates for a single weather-related claim. Multiple claims in a short period can affect premiums. Consult your carrier for specifics on your policy.
How do I vet a roofer who shows up after the storm?
Look up their Arizona ROC license number at the Arizona Registrar of Contractors website before you let anyone on your roof. Verify they carry liability insurance and workers' comp. What if a roofer already looked and found nothing?
